Who's Your Legislator?
Getting to know your Representatives in the State Senate, Assembly, Congress and U.S. Senate is important. The work they do affects the work we do, and they need to know how we are affected and how the quality of patient care in Nevada is affected.
We will be visiting our State legislators in March 2009 (details to follow) at Carson City Lobby Day. Please email jjordan@acc.org if you are interested in joining us. Staff from ACC National will be on hand to provide us with the 'how to's' and the materials we will need.
If you are not able to join us in Carson City, you can always write to your policymakers. Public officials look forward to receiving mail from constituents. They especially look forward to hearing from people who are experts in their field, like you. Knowing your thoughts and concerns helps them do a better job. Sending letters or making calls to your legislators should be considered a professional duty. This is one easy way you can help improve cardiology in your community. Here are some tips to consider when writing your letter:
* Legislators have to absorb alot in a short amount of time. Be brief. Try to keep it to one page.
* Be polite, respectful and level-headed.
* Use your own words. It will sound more sincere.
* Include personal stories and observations to make your point. These are very persuasive.
* Avoid "medical-ese" or technical talk.
* Be clear about your concerns and what you want the legislator to do.
* Make sure your letter is easy to read.
* Ask for a response. Include your contact info in the letter.
* Write to thank the legislator when it is appropriate. Everyone likes to be recognized for their efforts.
